Finally, features you'll get in Nero but not in Roxio are data recovery and the Nero Live TV-watching software, neither of which are as good as standalone options. Both suite's Blu-ray capabilities, however, presented problems during my testing.Īnother reason to invest in one of these suites is to burn ISO disc images, which you can't do with Windows' built-in tools. Nero 9 and Roxio Easy Media Creator 2009 can both burn a data Blu-ray disc from the basic suite, but for more advanced stuff like authoring video menus, you need a $9.95 plug-in for Nero and a $29.95 plug-in for Roxio.

Those who are looking at it purely from that perspective should be aware that one capability that isn't included with Vista or Mac OS is Blu-ray authoring and burning. This year Nero 9 edges out Roxio Creator 2009, but only marginally, but the question still remains: Are either of these monster suites still worth their prices? Since these suites made their debuts, many of their functions have been incorporated into the reigning OSs or are available as freeware.

These outsize bundles of software got their start in the multimedia CD-ROM craze of 1995 and have grown to encompass all facets of burning data and media CDs, DVDs, and now Blu-ray discs, as well as authoring, editing, and managing video, music, and image files.
